Klezmer Music Jewish wedding and Concierto de Aranjuez

Back on the Costa Blanca: Duo Chalil (Peter Muntel, Oboe and Ralf Winkelmann, Guitar) who gave a much admired performance last year at the Borja Palace. It was like being transformed to the streets of ancient Jerusalem and the evening was described as moving, exciting and most of all entertaining as only a performance of world class musicians can be. The guitar-oboe duo CHALIL was formed in Bremen in 2000. The partnership originally intended for a single occasion proved to be very successful and the following year they gave almost fifty concerts. A special feature of the duo’s sound is that they have chosen another woodwind, the oboe, in place of the clarinet which is very popular in Klezmer music. The explanation for their choice of instrument also throws light on the duo’s archaic-sounding name. In Old Testament times the Chalil was a very popular instrument; it is mentioned in several places in the Bible. It was often translated as flute, perhaps because it is related to the Greek aulos. It is known in Arabic as mummer. The description of its sound suggests that it most closely resembles the modern oboe.

The duo’s oboist, Peter Müntel, received training in classical music in Hamburg and Berlin . He has taken part in a number of master courses, among others at the Bach Academy in Stuttgart , France and Italy . He has been playing Klezmer and Israeli music since 1992 and appeared on several Kleymer CDs. He has also recorded and performed all major oboe concerts and is the principal oboist of the Stateorchestra of the Free and Hanseatic League City of Bremen.

Ralf Winkelmann studied the classical guitar in Cologne and Paris , where he got his concert diploma with Professor A. Ponce and has since appeared in many countries of Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. Numerous CDs are available with the label “Daminus Records” and the “Starfish Label”. Regular appearances on the northern German Radio Network and in TV-Productions, in various formations and as a soloist, make him one of the most sought after guitar teachers in northern Germany . He teaches at the Conservatoire Bremen.

This incredible duo will give us a bit of both Jewish and Spanish music. Until spring 1492 Spanish Jews lived peacefully with the Arabs and Christians, until they were forced to to be baptised or had to flee from Spain . Therefore many of the pieces played by Peter and Ralph are both historic and deeply moving but also very joyous as in the case of the wonderfully amusing “Dance of the Rabbi”. In their performance they will also play the wonderful, famous theme from the “Concierto de Aranjuez” described as the essence of Spanish music. The dates for the performances are as follows:

Fri., 11th July, 21.00h “Maseltov in the Masserof” (Restaurant Masserof, opp. Verd I Vent, Sierra Bernia - €25.- incl Tapas & Wine)
Sat., 12th July, 20.00h “A Summer Night in Garden Eden” (Mas la Pau , Lliber, CV 478 Lliber-Gata, signposted on the Night - €20.-)
Wed., 16th July, 21.00h “Music between heaven and earth” (Garden Concert in the Hotel Villa Gadea, Altea at the Bar "Oasis" next to the pool - €20.)
Thu., 17th July, 20.00h “Dance with the Rabbi - Klezmer meets Classic” (Restaurant L'hort, Javea - €25.- incl Tapasbuffet)
All concert venues have easy access (wheelchair) and offer ample parking. For more information, mail Lutz on palmaconcerts@yahoo.es or Tel.: 966 498 503

Also included in the exhibition is a selection of black and white photography of Denia Port from her recent photographic book entitled, ¨DENIA¨.

Peter Van Straaten, chef and owner, says he is delighted to host this exhibition as it represents a segment not only of Denia´s seafaring history, but the wonderful ships that sailed the region.

GEORGIE FAME LIVE IN CONCERT

Black American GIs, West Indians, pimps, prostitutes and gangsters were, according to top musician Georgie Fame, his main audience during the 60´s at London’s Flamingo Club. He forgot to mention they were all night sessions and that Benny Davis was also there - but I am not too sure what category I came under. This July, Georgie will be playing to what I presume will be an entirely different audience when he performs high up in the clouds at the Monte Pego Restaurant on Wednesday July 2nd for one night only.

Pianist and vocalist Georgie Fame first hit the music headlines in the 60´s with chart toppers such as; Yeh Yeh, Sitting in the Park, Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde and Rosetta. During the 70´s, he formed a successful partnership with Alan Price - former keyboard player with The Animals – which produced another hit single, Rosetta. Never the one to stand still, the 90´s saw this energetic personality collaborating with Van Morrison on numerous albums as well as playing Hammond Organ on live concert tours. Since then Georgie has kept busy writing TV jingles, scores for feature films, his own BBC radio series and an award winning television film based on his musical tribute to the legendary Hoagy Carmichael. His travels have seen him performing as sideman to greats such as, Count Basie, Muddy Waters, Joan Armatrading, Ronnie Scott, Bill Wyman and Eric Clapton. During his 40 years in the business, he has recorded over 20 albums and 14 hit singles.

Presented by El Pianista & Co, the evening will include a special classic cuisine barbecue buffet prepared by the Monte Pego award winning chefs, complemented with fine wines, beer and soft drinks. All these goodies will be served on the top-of-the-world terrace accompanied by panoramic views and very special resident piano man Dave Lewis. The evening commences at 9.00pm with Georgie fame onstage from around 11.00pm until 1.00am. Fully inclusive ticket 75 euros available from the Monte Pego box office on 628 300 167, every Friday night from 10pm in the Live Lounge, underneath the Monte Pego Restaurant, or Email: liveloungemontepego@gmail.com

GRAND CHARITY BALL ANNOUNCED IN AID OF THE HELP ASSOCIATION OF VEGA BAJA

Diaries at the ready....
Long before many of us have taken our first dip in the ocean for the 2008 summer season, a glittering ball is being planned for the autumn. The date for this very special event is Saturday 25th October 2008.

Organisers are hoping that by publicising the event early, people will secure the date in their diaries for what promises to be a sumptuous, bib and tucker affair.
The location for the charity ball is the beautifully refurbished banqueting hall at the Castillo de Conesa of San Miguel de Salinas, where guests can soak up the atmosphere and sample food prepared by the Castillo’s chefs who are renowned far and wide for their excellent cuisine.
President of the HELP Association Vega Baja, John Saunders, whose wife, June, is organising the grand charity ball, said: “This will be a very special evening indeed and will give people the opportunity to dress up, eat, drink and dance the night away in the castle’s impressive banqueting hall.

We hope that the groups and societies which have supported HELP Vega Baja in the past will support us again by reserving a table or two at the ball. We also hope to welcome new supporters to this year’s event – whether they are couples seeking an ideal venue for a wedding anniversary, or business associations and social groups looking for a unique evening out.”

The HELP Association Vega Baja is a registered charity, which assists thousands of people of all ages who live in, or visit, the Vega Baja region every year. Events such as the grand charity ball are essential fund raisers for the charity to enable its team of volunteers to continue offering vital help to the community, and to run its two offices and 24 hour emergency helpline.

The price per ticket is 50 euros, which includes welcome drinks and canapés, a four course sit-down meal with a vegetarian option, and unlimited wine, beer and soft drinks throughout the meal. Music and dancing will follow, as well as a grand raffle. All profits from the evening will go to the HELP Association of Vega Baja.

Reservations & enquiries can be made by at: junebakerhoward@hotmail.com or by telephone on:
966 710 005 or 662 079 222.

Medieval Market in La Nucia

On 4, 5 and 6 July the beautifully restored old town centre of La Nucia will once again be the stage on which a Medieval Market will be set, for the fourth year in succession.  The first Market was just a part of the 300th anniversary of the founding of La Nucia but the event is rapidly becoming a tradition in this village, just 10 minutes drive from Benidorm.  Besides an extremely busy programme of events (a complete troupe of knights, minstrels, a story teller, beggars, nobles and acrobats) there are also displays of master craftsmen at work.

You can watch a stone carver at work, a wheelwright making a cart wheel, and Xavier - one of the few tin smiths left in Spain - making tin cans.  For the children there are medieval fun fair attractions, donkey rides, games and workshops.  A flock of geese marches through the market followed by their owner, and there are demonstrations of the long bow and spear throwing.  On the square in front of the town hall the knights will be building up their camp so that the curious passer-by can take a good look at life in medieval times.

The main body of the Market consists of some 70 craft stalls with an extremely varied offer of goods.  Amata, the association organising the event, makes sure that nothing is bought from abroad and that all is made by the people on the stall - thus the visitor can be sure of good quality and has the opportunity to place a custom order if needed. There is a wide variety of food and drink, to take home or to try right there in the tavern or the tea tent. The market in La Nucia is open on Friday the 4th, Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th from 6 pm until midnight (or perhaps later). More information, also in English, on 639 979 678

Medieval Market on the Castle tour
Have you ever tried following the Castle Route in Alicante province?  On what was once the border between Valencia and Castilla there are a whole series of castles, some just ruins but others in good repair, and well worth a visit.  Starting in Alicante with both Santa Bárbara and San Fernando castles, you follow the main motorway to Madrid and pass by castles in Novelda, Elda, Petrel, Sax, Villena and, if you turn off a little way to the right, castles in Biar and Banyeres de Mariola.
The reason why we draw your attention to this route is that on the week-end of 12 and 13 July a Medieval Market will be held in Banyeres de Mariola.

The village is built on top of a hill and the Market will be held in the village square in the middle of the town, just a few steps below the impressive castle.  The castle itself is open to the public over this weekend.

The Medieval Market is in fact just part of the fiestas to honour the patron saint Santa Maria Magdalena and this will be the second time that Amata, an association dedicated to preserving the arts and crafts, will be organising the event.  After last year’s success the Town Hall asked for more workshops and more demonstrations this year, so there’s lots to see and to do.

Besides some 50 arts and craft stalls and a busy tavern, there will be demonstrations by a potter, a soap maker, a weaver and a musical instrument maker, mostly making stringed instruments.  For the children there is a games area, a miniature animal farm, workshops where they can learn the beginnings of a craft and a teller of fairy tales.  Mingling with the crowd will be some unusual medieval people including someone on stilts and late in the evening the juggler plays with fire.

The Market is open on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July from 12 noon to 2.30 pm and from 6 pm until quite late.

NOT MENTIONED IN THE BROCHURE

A Hilarious Look at Expat life in Spain
An evening with Jane Cronin Featuring guitarist Danny Ray.
Centro cultural, Virgen del Carmen, Torrevieja
Saturday 12th July 2008 at 8 p.m.

If you want a fantastic evening’s entertainment then come along to Jane Cronin’s hysterically funny show Not Mentioned in the Brochure at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, Torrevieja on Saturday 12th July at 8 p.m.

Jane’s stand up comedy show has been staged over the winter season at various venues on the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida, culminating in this great one night performance which is part of the Torrevieja summer cultural programme.

At long last you can find out what really goes on behind your neighbours’ closed doors, what happens after a night out with the Costa Blanca belly dancing troupe or why that famous Mediterranean diet hasn’t quite worked for everybody! You will also meet up with those characters that have become so familiar to us all, including the Man in the Bar, the Moaning Git, Ms. Starry Eyes, Mr. Ever-so-helpful and dear old Bert and Mildred who are just trundling along, trying to do the right thing in a confusing world.

Included in this evening of pure comedy, are five satirical songs composed specially for the show and performed to the strains of Danny Ray’s guitar and the unveiling of two brand new surprise features.

Tickets are 12,50€ available from the Torrevieja Municipal Theatre ticket office which opens from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except Mondays).

For further ticket information phone Adrian on 619 488 903. www.janecronin.com/nmitb
