| Music Showcase for MABSIf you want to enjoy great musical entertainment pop into any one of dozens of Costa Blanca bars and restaurants. If you want to enjoy several of the top singers and musicians in one venue on the same evening put in your diary NOW, “Music Showcase, Careline Theatre, Alcalali, Wednesday September 22 at 20.00 hrs.” Music Showcase is being staged by Vernon and Celia Pearce in aid of the cancer support charity, MABS. They have lived in Spain for three years. They have become troupers themselves with Careline Theatre and have become big fans of many of the singers and musicians they have found in bars and restaurants on the Costa Blanca. Tragedy struck their personal lives a year ago when Celia sister died of breast cancer and when they discovered what marvellous work is being done by MABS in Spain for cancer patients and their families they hit on the idea of trying to put some of the top quality musical entertainment they have enjoyed so enormously in bars and restaurants on stage for the benefit of MABS. Music Showcase will take to the Alcalali stage for one night only with every cent taken at the box office going to the charity – all of the performers are foregoing their performance fees to benefit this enormously worthwhile charity.
Among the entertainers already in the 'Showcase' are Chill Factor, Suzy Q, Malcolm Adams, Pauline McGough and The Nomad. They are expected to be joined by some more big favourites from the bars and restaurants of the Costa Blanca.
Tickets are priced at 10 Euros and are on sale at Kelly's of La Xara and the box office on 96 557 74 61.

To finish off this season of workshops the group will be presentation the songs they have learned in a concert called “Celebration of Song” on Friday 24th September at the Benissa Casa de Cultura. The concert also includes performances from Sounds Familiar, Adagio, Sue Benson, and Jo Baldwin.
Music from the workshops includes the opening number from Chess called Merano, I’m a Believer from the Monkees, Somebody to Love by Queen, but sung in the style of Glee, and a vocal only arrangement of The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Each of the songs was chosen to work on a specific aspect of singing such as breath control, diction, phrasing and voice control for close harmony singing. With a musical range stretching from Choral to Rock the singers have also had to learn how to change the way they sound for each number.
The regular cast from Sounds Familiar will be performing a few numbers from their recent show “Musical Magic”. Adagio, the vocal quartet, will give a small selection including A Chorus Line and The Beatles. Sue Benson, also from Adagio, has selected a few numbers from her Benidorm Cabaret show. The Musical Director of the English Choir, and Coral Clásica Javiense, Jo Baldwin will be singing a range of showtunes.
The concert begins at 8pm with tickets priced at 12 euros. 25% of the ticket sales will be given directly to the Lions Club of Calpè and Benissa so they can continue their charitable work in the community.
Tickets are available from members of the cast, or by telephone on 96 558 1483. You can also buy tickets by credit card or PayPal online at www.soundsfamiliar.es | Annual Summer BBQSaturday 11th September, 7.30pm ‘til late at Finca Abril, Binyent, Nr Benissa. Choral items will be provided by the group “Chorale” to include “Ave Maria” (Schubert), “When I fall in Love”, and – amazingly – the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah”. Not the full work, but a shortened version specially arranged for the choir.

This article struck a cord within me so I started to think about how MOSAIC our new Contemporary Cafe Style, Multi-Cultural Cell Church based here on the Costa Blanca and HosAnna, a group formed for ladies of all seasons, to meet together to learn more about each other, share each other’s burdens, serve one another and to learn new life skills, could support this superb Charity. Two ideas materialised, the first is called
DROP IN A BOX
As part of a pilot scheme in Javea, we have asked some of the Supermarkets to provide a Trolley, Basket or a Box so that the more fortunate of us can purchase one item (or more if we can afford it) from the CARITAS basic food list comprising of Rice, Pasta, Lentils, Flour, Long Life Milk, Sugar and Cooking Oil, when we do our main shopping.
There have been a number of hurdles to jump to get this project off the ground but we are hopeful that, by the time you read this article, DROP IN A BOX will have been launched. If it runs successfully we may be able to introduce it into other areas.
Of course we are aware that times are exceptionally hard for many of us so you might be interested to learn that CARITAS provides for people who are officially resident in Spain.
To find out how to get help if you live in the Javea area, please go to our websites or call in and speak to us at our new DROP IN held at “The Javea Christian Centre” - Calle Arquitecto Urteaga 25 - Javea - 03730, on Fridays between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
The second idea came as a result of chatting with a couple of friends who wanted to put on a Fashion Show. Another bell rang loudly. The result is not just a Fashion Show but something that has grown into, what we hope will be, a fantastic day out for the family.
